This post started as my thoughts on the beauty and strength of women, but quickly morphed into friendship. I think those thought processes are connected.
This year I’ve fallen in love with lots of things, but the thing I’ve maybe fallen in love with deepest is friendship. Last night I was having a conversation about seasons in life and the friends that can sit in those different spaces with you, not abandon you when you are awkward, or not “on,” when your sadness spills out or parenting is hard. Those relationships have become more precious as time goes on. Friends who can sit with your real are friends to hold onto. I’ve mainly made peace with Instagram and the perfectionist anxiety it can bring out in me. I see it now as a beautiful tool of connection, but still a tool. Defining it as such, versus the sum total of my life and worth has been so freeing. The real life is happening behind the scenes, the postpartum, the no sleep, the showing up late or not at all, because my daughter was crying. Hold onto those friends who love you, not in spite of it, but because they see YOU.

Last year we went on this hike and I told her we were moving. She would hardly talk to me and cried that day, and for weeks after.
I felt so worried repeating our steps and would she remember like I remembered. Instead we talked about her kick overs and alllllllll the Jaguar facts. But she did remember almost running into a moose and how scared I was. It’s amazing what we hold and what we release.
A year of perspective is a beautiful thing.

Charleston, SC
I am a collector of obscure facts. Like how Theodosia Burr Alston, of “Dear Theodosia” fame and highly educated daughter of Aaron Burr ended up in South Carolina. She married Joseph Alston, wealthy landowner and eventual governor of SC. Their only child tragically died at age 10 from malaria and she also suffered from poor health. She disappeared at sea, off the coast of South Carolina at only 29-years-old. Her ship was never found. How sad is all of that? She was sailing to visit her father in New York, who she hadn’t seen in years. He had been in exile in Europe and not because he killed Alexander Hamilton. It’s a messy web, Friends!
When I was in Charleston and looked out at the beautiful ocean, I couldn’t help think of her and what a tragic figure Aaron Burr is. Books, plays, movies, always have a set start and stop point. But the story continues long after. I wonder how she felt moving from New York to South Carolina and I wonder about Aaron Burr, who lost his wife and then only grandchild/only child in in such a short span.
History is crazy fascinating.

We found out last night that the 1947 bungalow we lived in for 10 years, that we remodeled continuously & brought all three babies home too flooded worse then we thought.
It was the space that held our infertility heartbreak, our late nights with Lucy, Jack and Nora as we watched the Eastern sunrise glow into our bedroom. We bought it for the beautiful wooden floors and didn’t realize at the time all our money would go into its renewal.
We’ve been gone not quite a year and the news was a dagger to my heart. We are still finding new places to change our address, but that address is currently gutted and vacant.
I can’t imagine how hard it is for the new owners, but there’s a heartache now permanently lodged in a little corner of my heart.
I think the lesson is, love what you love as deeply as you can while it’s yours. But let it go when it’s time.
I think the Universe is working on stripping me bare. I could tally up all that was lost, left, or ended these last two years and my heart aches again. But I can also see all that was gained from letting go of that loss. I’m in the middle and still learning the lessons. I can’t change the past and I can’t stop future heartache. But, I get to choose, every day, to step into the imperfection of life, and live it to my fullest and truly, how great of a gift is that?

I’ll never let go of the romance. I’ve been reading fairy tales since I was 7 and daydreaming much longer. I listen to Amelié & Pride Prejudice when I travel and am moved me to tears every time. I’ll never forget Italian bus rides with, “Liz on Gol of the World,” piercing my soul. I wear my heart on my sleeve and I speak from my heart. I can be overly sensitive but I’m loyal until the very end. I fall in love with almost everyone I meet (unless you stare daggers at my kids, then you are dead to me.) I see the beauty in sadness and the transformation of life experience on our souls. I make up stories as I drive past windows, and dream as mountains and fields race past my site. There’s no point in changing who I am, I’ve always been a follower of the heart, passionate about so many things it makes Scott’s head spin. My weaknesses are tied to my strengths, I care so much, I chase approval, love not retuned feels like bitter rejection. But, but, but, why would I change the shape of who I was born to be. I’ll always be riding the highs and ebbing the lows.
